... in the sandbox. Here's the current members of the lab.

Arjun Bharioke
Assistant Professor
Having moved across 4 countries growing up, Arjun did his undergrad degree at the University of Toronto. He split his studies across all three sciences, with a double major in Biochemistry and Chemical Physics (theoretical quantum mechanics), and a minor in Mathematics. With an interest in neural computation, he did his PhD under Mitya Chklovskii and Simon Laughlin, jointly between the University of Cambridge and HHMI's Janelia Research Campus. For his postdoctoral work, he travelled, yet again, to Switzerland, to work with Botond Roska. Now in Charleston, he enjoys birdwatching and wildlife photography along the coastline, when he is isn't asking questions about circuit neuroscience and cognitive function.

Julia Loghinov
Research Trainee
Originally from Moldova, Julia grew up across the US, living in a total of 6 different states at 14 different locations. She earned her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience with a Computational Concentration, as well as a minor in Biomedical Engineering, from Carnegie Mellon University in 2023. During her undergrad, Julia conducted research under Alison Barth, exploring the neural correlates of learning and memory. She then spent her first year post-grad in Seattle, joining a research startup in Alzheimer's drug discovery. Making her return to academia, Julia is now in Charleston investigating the neural circuitry behind consciousness at the Bharioke lab, while enjoying learning to surf, creating tie-dye art, and exploring the local music scene in her free time.

Catherine Cadrecha
Research Trainee
Cat, originally from Tampa, Florida, graduated from the University of Florida in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in Health Science. During her undergraduate years, she conducted research with Dr. Jared Tanner, focusing on brain age and studying the machine learning models used to estimate it. When she isn't delving into the complexities of the mind, she is pursuing her passions in aviation and music, either flying ultralight airplanes or practicing the piano. Now in Charleston, she is exploring both the city and the intricacies of cortical circuit computations as a member of The Bharioke Lab.

Aidan Nuzum-Clark
Computer Scientist
Born in California but raised outside of Boston, Aidan earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minor in Math from UMass Amherst in 2021. Continuing at UMass, he received his master’s in Computer Science with a focus in machine learning in 2023. At the Bharioke lab, Aidan is exploring how features from the development of biological neural networks might contribute to the training of artificial neural networks. Outside of work he has a passion for game development and an interest in reinforcement learning (the underlying neuroscience of which has also been piquing his interest). More importantly, he hopes to one day determine the optimal strategy for his family's favorite card game, Quest.

Jayden Martin
Graduate Student
A South Carolina local, Jayden was born and raised in Simpsonville. He graduated from Presbyterian College in 2024, with both a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and his first taste of scientific research, in an inorganic chemistry lab. Having whetted his taste buds, Jayden moved to MUSC to investigate alcohol-biased signaling in the mediodorsal thalamus, jointly under Patrick Mulholland and Jen Rinker. In the lab, he is building on this prior work in fiber photometry and data analysis and transitioning to working with two-photon imaging data and studying the dynamics of ensembles of neurons in both the adult and embryonic mouse cortex. In his free time, Jayden enjoys being a dog dad to his dog, Harley, and playing below-average golf.

Courtney Raymond
Masters Student
Born in Georgia, Courtney travelled around the US and England during her childhood, before returning to her home state for college. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology, and an initial aim to become a Physician’s Assistant. However, research caught her eye, and she joined MUSC’s masters program to expand her research experience. Her long-standing interests in psychology and anatomy have fueled her excitement to be working in the lab, where those interests intertwine in questions about the formation of circuits within the brain, and how those circuits implement cognitive functions. Outside of the lab, Courtney enjoys creating artwork, going to concerts, and drinking Diet Coke.

Nathanael Rios
Undergraduate Student
Originating in Bluffton, South Carolina, Nathanael is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in Neuroscience. Having recently completed his second year at the College of Charleston, he is particularly interested in neural organoids and their potential for brain model research, leading to his current enrollment in the MUSC SURP internship. In the lab, he is studying the activity of mouse cortical neurons, and the effects of local perturbations to this activity. Outside of the laboratory, Nathanael enjoys running track, practicing the piano, and drawing.

Lily Cate Hunter
Undergraduate Student
Originally a Charleston, South Carolina native, Lily Cate is currently a rising third-year undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Neuroscience. In the Bharioke lab, she is particularly interested in studying attention, behavior, and their effects on varying cell types within mice. Outside the lab, in her free time, she enjoys dancing ballet and playing piano. She has joined the lab as part of the DART Research program and is excited for this opportunity to be learning alongside other trainees and students, as part of the program!
Stars of yesteryear...
Past members of the lab...

Andrew Sanchez
Graduate Student (Rotation)
Originally from Rochester in upstate New York, Andrew graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in Biology. Before joining the graduate program in MUSC, Andrew worked at The Ohio State University in Dr. Ruth Barrientos' Lab as a PREP Scholar. He looked at macronutrient contribution to memory deficits in aged and young rats. In the lab, Andrew learned two-photon microscopy on our acousto-optic two photon. He has now moved on to do his graduate work in the Berto lab, here, at MUSC.

Heena Dave
Graduate Student (Rotation)
Heena is originally from Mumbai, India. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences from the University of Mumbai before moving to the United States to pursue her Master’s at MUSC, focusing on the role of centrosomal-associated proteins in tumor prevention. Now pursuing her PhD, Heena is passionate about exploring complex biological systems and expanding her knowledge in biomedical science. In the lab, Heena focused on analyzing population neuronal data. She has now moved on to do her graduate work in the Bradshaw lab, here, at MUSC.
